What Sheet Piling Is & How It Works

Sheet piling is achieved by driving prefabricated sections into the ground. The best sheet pile system, steel sheets or vinyl sheets, depends on the environment and the load the sheet pile wall must resist. Soil conditions may allow the sections to be vibrated into the ground instead of hammer driven. The full wall is formed by connecting the interlocking joints of adjacent sheet pile sections in sequential installation, so the wall resists earth and water using its full section.

Hot-Rolled vs. Cold-Rolled Sheet Piles

Hot-Rolled Sections

Stronger interlocks and thicker sections, more reliable in tough driving conditions and for long-term loads. A wide range of sheet pile sections and profiles are available from many steel manufacturers.

Cold-Rolled Sections

More affordable and effective in less demanding soils, but usually thinner with weaker interlocks. In hard driving they can “unzip” or cause alignment problems and may be more prone to overstressing during driving.

How Sheet Piles Are Installed

Driven sheet piles are installed with vibrating hammers operated off leaders mounted on tracked base machines or suspended from crawler cranes. Diesel impact hammers and hydraulic press-in machines can also drive or push the piles into place. Where soils are stiff or hard, water jetting or preboring is used to assist penetration. In limestone conditions, we also provide limestone drilling and rock predrilling services to support sheet pile installation.
