Cofferdam Florida
A cofferdam is a fully enclosed temporary or permanent structure made with interlocking steel or vinyl sheets, designed to provide a dry working environment by retaining surrounding soil and water. Foundation Masters, LLC (CA# 30969) engineers and installs cofferdams across Florida for marine construction, foundation excavation, bridge piers, utilities, and environmental containment.
Florida’s Longest-Running Foundation Repair & Structural Engineering Firm
For more than 25 years, Foundation Masters has designed, engineered, and installed foundation repair, underpinning, deep foundation, sheet piling, cofferdam, and structural stabilization systems. As Florida’s longest-running foundation repair company under continuous ownership, Foundation Masters provides engineered solutions backed by decades of field experience and documented project performance.
Sheet Piling & Marine Systems
Cofferdams are one part of our sheet piling and marine lineup. We install it, we sell and rent new and used sheets, and we will buy your surplus back.
Expert Cofferdam Design & Installation for Florida’s Coastal and High-Water-Table Sites
Florida’s combination of high groundwater tables, loose sandy soils, and tidal fluctuations makes cofferdam design critical for safe marine and inland construction. Properly engineered cofferdams must resist lateral earth pressures of 250 to 400 psf and hydrostatic water loads that can exceed 300 psf during storm events or tidal surge. Our process begins with a geotechnical assessment to determine soil bearing capacity (often between 1,500 and 3,000 psf in coastal zones), groundwater elevation, and surcharge loads from nearby structures or equipment.
Foundation Masters installs both steel sheet pile cofferdams and interlocking vinyl sheet cofferdams, using vibratory hammers, impact hammers, or hydraulic presses depending on subsurface conditions. Internal bracing systems, including wales and struts engineered for 40 to 100 kips of load per brace, maintain stability under heavy water and soil pressure. Cofferdam Sheet Pile
Steel sheet piling can be installed using vibratory hammers, impact hammers, or hydraulic presses, depending on soil conditions and project requirements. The interlocking sections create a watertight barrier, which can be reinforced with internal bracing systems such as walers and struts to withstand lateral earth and hydrostatic pressures. Depending on the design, the sheet piles may be extracted after project completion or left in place as a permanent structural element. See our sheet piling contractors page for the full sheet pile process.
Cofferdam Uses in Florida
In Florida, cofferdams play a crucial role in construction due to the state’s high water table, sandy soils, and extensive coastline. Common applications include:
Marine Construction
Cofferdams create a dry workspace in submerged or coastal areas for the installation of seawalls, docks, and piers.
Bridge & Highway Infrastructure
Florida’s many waterways require cofferdams for construction and maintenance of bridge piers, causeways, and culverts.
Flood Control & Stormwater
Temporary cofferdams manage water flow during levee repairs, storm drain installations, and flood mitigation projects.
Utility & Pipeline Installation
Cofferdams provide a stable work area for underground utilities, including water mains and sewer systems, in areas prone to groundwater intrusion.
Environmental Protection & Containment
For contamination or dredging, cofferdams isolate polluted sediments and prevent the spread of hazardous materials into Florida’s waterways.
Mechanical Repairs & Replacements
Cofferdams enable maintenance of submerged mechanical systems such as pumps, intake structures, turbine components, and drainage infrastructure in dry, controlled conditions.
Cofferdams for Contaminated Soil Removal
Cofferdams play a critical role in environmental remediation involving contaminated soil removal. In Florida, where industrial activity, stormwater runoff, and coastal erosion can lead to soil pollution, cofferdams provide a controlled method for excavation and containment.
Hazardous Waste Cleanup
Cofferdams create a sealed work area, preventing the spread of contaminants during excavation and disposal.
Petroleum & Chemical Spill Remediation
For underground storage tank leaks or industrial spills, cofferdams isolate affected soil, allowing safe removal and treatment.
Dredging & Sediment Management
Contaminated sediments from lakes, rivers, and harbors can be safely removed without dispersing pollutants into surrounding waters.
Brownfield Redevelopment
When developing former industrial or commercial sites with known contamination, cofferdams stabilize excavation zones for safe removal of toxic materials.
By providing an effective barrier against water intrusion and contaminant migration, cofferdams enhance the safety and efficiency of soil remediation in Florida’s environmentally sensitive regions. Industry references: Pile Buck: Cofferdams 101 and Cofferdam (overview).
